Well years ago in School we were as children forced to create Diorama’s and have a little presentation about them. This isn’t the one.
The one I did was about weird science experiments and special effect’s use in the movie industry. My elements of interest were all over the place from the hypnotic spinner used to convince you in the beginning of a late night Rod Serling show. Various Illusion effects and some Foley art tricks . well needless to say I effing Bombed on that one. They did not define the limits of our Theme so I went so far outside the box , I had to visit a Catholic school Guidance Councillor, or as commonly know as Father Mac Anany ..
Luckily He was a big science geek also , So instead of the usual Catholic form of discipline he told me to try getting into Oratorical contest’s like the Toastmaster held, This one was in separate age levels, My self I was 11 and in grade 8 so They(my parents and the Priest) signed me up . No one told me that the topic was handed to you half hour before you were to make a 4 minute speech. Well I got ” Should a Priest have a second Vocation”. I nailed it because I heard of the monks making cheese in Oka in grade 6 so I totally plagiarized that class, nailed it got a Silver dollar for the win, and now that silver dollar happens to be worth a few bucks, So kinda a win win.
Was supposed to represent the School in the provincials that year but was informed by my parents that we had to Move Again, which suck’s dogs balls always moving. Moved on to Kitimat bc arrived at the new high school one age level to low to start high school although I was excepted at Notre Dame in Welland to start at 12 years old. So having to redo Grade 8 in Bc was a breeze, knocked off the compulsorily and challenged the Grade 9 got it for the second semester.
May i add at this time in my life I was still about 4′ 3″ tall not quite the tallest weed in the garden but here I was. This is the point in time when I met my first friend in the new school, Peter Runions He was extremely nice to introduce me to the town although I had been there for about 4 months already. The Second person I made friends with was Paula Hazlett we met at the Park in Kildala when she was interested in Peter.
So to put this in perspective I’am short but can talk my way out of anything. Then the 6 inch summer had kicked in. By the beginning of 1978 semester I was now 5 feet tall woo hoo not the shortest person in School but still mistaken for a 8th grader. that year the Initiation was weird I was in half 200 and 300 courses. Of course if you cannot tell my English skill’s were lousy I could not put together a sentence structure if my frigging life depended on it . But I could write and make a speech to beat anyone .
So in grade 9 science the diorama thing came up again so being the lazy little person I was I once again copied myself from my Ontario work. New province who would know? Well as it turn out my teacher would because it was in my transfer papers from School. Damm almost got away with it so I was forced to do an off subject presentation. So I went with a Popular Science project I was playing with on sound transference via vibrations through a board in the wall instead of a speaker. could only get the mid range sounds to work though as i knew nothing about Crossover sound separators.
So Now i’m 53 and a few days away from 54 and what do I do for fun now? Well Dr Who of course and now new sci-fi shows Killjoys , all Star trek and of Course STAR WARS , I mean really who hasn’t seen a Star Wars anything yet?
Then of late Comic Cons where anyone and every one can be Who and What they feel. so next month i will rearrange the little homage to Dr Who and post a new photo. until then Monday is my 30th wedding Anniversary and as any man know that Shit should not be Ignored .
When I received the Message from Tommy’s Family of his passing I had a sudden flash back to all of our interactions. I really cannot remember that actual first time we met but it was at a RiverCity Comic and Toy Show in Winnipeg Mb . His inital hello was a surprise as at the time I was not aware that visitors of these show were allowed to interact with Celebrities. Many show later I was informed that this type of hi neighbor attitude was common in these shows.
after several years of meeting at Comic shows the banter between Tommy and his partner at the time Samantha was always fun and enlightening to learn of ART.
Then it was about 2012 when I was volunteering Tommy and I sat down before the Diner at C4winnipeg.com we got to talking about HOW, how I was attached to the show and why. He was genuinely Interested in this information, This surprised me as that a good majority of the Celebrities do not concern with the Volunteers. I have told him of how Mike Paille had asked me to join his band of Volunteer’s for his shows back in December of 2006 . I said Ok in a sort of scared way, .
Tommy than asked if I was associated through like being one of the promoters I sort of chuckled and said No I’m just a normal person that said yes to Mike and Violet, I just volunteer and sometimes my daughter does some of the minor print jobs for them. After this he then went on to talk about his new wife Sammy and their voyage to this years show like I had known him his whole life (Which I have not) , then Tommy sent one of the volunteers on a “Witch-hunt” for a Cigar for him to have before Diner now that was funny, this poor girl ran off like her whole world would crash if she did not complete the task, and then 1 Minute later Sammy show’s up with the desired item in hand wondering where their liaison disappeared to?. The smirk on Tommy’s face was ( A to bust a rib laughing it’s our inside joke ) SMIRK. That diner night was golden every on got to interact and a Nice night of meeting and greeting Celebrities.
At the end of that Convention as we were all breaking down the show Tommy and Sammy motion me to their Table and without hesitation he said ” here take these sketches to the Volunteer table to hand out for all the good work they did for us” This act alone showed me that he was not only talented but also very giving to those who have given to him.
after hooking up at several show the conversation started to become like we were friends , the conversation were of normal topics like how the Family and how is every feeling this year, normal banter. he then tells me that they have noticed that my Daughter had frequented their table but never asked any questions. I replied that Jesslyn was not only in awe of his work but scared of his presence because he was outgoing and she, Jesslyn was timed and overwhelmed by his talent it took several years for her to get up the courage to speak to Tommy.
Then following a meet and greet get together at C4Winnipeg.cm we were all sitting down and chatting , At this greet I was busy introducing many of the Celebrities to each other , Even though they know who “they are” and who they are with it is customary to introduce every one . At this particular evening I had seen for my first time Two celebrities nerd out on each other this of course being Tommy Castillo and Rene Auberjonois they both started on Artistic skill and how they warm up for a show. It to me and Jesslyn who was sitting in the same couch amazing that this happened even at they’re level of “Stardom” this happened at all.
The following year as per Tommy’s instruction to Jesslyn she was to bring in her portfolio for him to critique. and this was the photos of that event
He was truthful and at this pint started her off on a new path to doing sketch work and art , his word though they sort of stung Jesslyn she understood what he was saying to her immediately, Tommy then requested that she send her work to him for further critic and he would not what and how to correct her work. this was A Great Moral booster for Jesslyn for sh was about to get a Mentor, Teacher and advisor.
Jesslyn and I would watch the Twitch channel of Tommy Castillo Atelier and join in on the chats while he was working , and these Twitch show were very engaging as to learning how and what to do in certain areas of creating art . The sadest part of always heving a conversation with both Tommy and Sammy is that we never took photos of each other, This is a lesson that has struck e ( leaving me to think ) that of all the guests hat have ever attended at a C4Winipeg.com and I interact with I have never taken a personnel photo, only the photo ops that pay for the guest appearance .
thebackyardgeek.com will surely miss seeing Tommy Castillo but we will always know that on our wall is one of his gifts to the world a Painting by Tommy Castillo
Rest in Peace our Friend and may the great Masters greet you with a smile and a brush while saying “We Have been waiting for you Good Sir.
so another great celebrity left us today and this one was the whole reason behind the creating of thebackyardgeeks , May you forever be in our Hearts ,
Our Greenroom talks will always be a fond memory of why you loved Conventions , For this We are saddened .

Once again, the gracious folks over at Galaxy Comics are hosting a creator showcase the same day as Free Comic Book Day (May 6). I’ll be there this Saturday not only checking out the free comics and emptying my subscription box for my take-homes, but also tabling on the second floor with superhero and monster…
The first photographs of a new and ominous crack in Greenland’s enormous Petermann glacier were captured by a NASA airborne mission on Friday. NASA’s Operation IceBridge, which has been flying over northwest Greenland for the past several days, took the photos after being provided coordinates by Stef Lhermitte, a professor at Delft University of Technology…
11 days late but!!!
Here we go, It was brought to my attention that I had not a single photo on My phone from the last Manitoba Comic Con show on April 1st and 2nd 2017. So I frantically searched through my phone and my computer to only realize this morning that. Me I yes the Old Fart had borrowed out my cell phone so that they the nice volunteers at the show could scan the Tickets.
Now finally coming to the fact that Me and the other Geeks on this site have approximately 4 camera’s two video camera’s one very old Tape Camera like you see on the show the Goldberg’s . Oh boy I knew I forgot something that was proof of my Volunteering at a C4Winnipeg then it had dawned on me , that I Asked a photographer that was doing the show Twyla Twalis to take a photo of Myself along with Actor Emma Caulfield of many TV iconic shows IE: Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Once Upon a Time, Fantasy Hospital and oops forgot about a Supergirl appearance.
I like this photo due to the fact that my Glass’s are sort of straight and the photographer had the kindness of hiding my Cane. please note that we had also interrupted Emma’s shopping at a vendors booth in order to get the shot. Also this is for the Wall of fame making it almost a solid wall of photos and Autographs
While I did have a chance to walk the floor of Manitoba Comic Con I got to say a long-lost HELLO to some of the Vendors and Friends.
The new section of the RBC Convention Center has some killer Art Work from Area Artist and easy access for people with Handicaps making them one of the go to buildings in the area.
Attendance was remarkable being as it was a smaller Event than normal but just as many enthused visitors and CosPlayers were to be seen about . While standing at my post at the entrance to the show I could not help but notice the rather large amount of the 3 Minute Artists works leaving the building and happy grins on the purchasers . The helpful Event volunteers and Directors were happily engaging patrons with nothing but smiles and directing them to where they wish to go. I say go Show for the team at C4Winnipeg
Until next time or until I hire a person with writing skills to post for Me I say Thank you for Attending and reading this post.
Well on the 12th of this month Jesslyn and I attended at book reading of the novel Son of A Trickster and signing by Eden Robinson . A Author that just happen’s to be from the Same Town I grew up in through my School years untill I left Kitimat Bc..
Let me tell you this you lady had an incredible laugh that would stick in your head even long after you met her. And her sense of houmor was incredible . belwo is some images of the day with I hope a little video clip.
Do not be alamerd by the Big huge guy that looks like the cookie monster on Majic brownies. the funny part is tthe croooke glass’s are showing the wrong eye that has the squint. or as the old folks home would say crazy eye.
Well once again this was a good show with a lot of local vendors, and most of them have very good ware’s seeing as how I missed the last show this was a good beginning to my year. Met up with many of my friends that we have made up with lost time and long-awaited meetings of the Nerd kind.
A couple of new venders with different types of items we picked up a Oculus headset , and an autographed photo with Adrienne Barbeau in another family photo minus my wife and their Mother who stayed home.
and there were many new and improved cosplayer at this show I and my fellow Geek were impressed with the new variations on old theme’s
And of course Winnipeg’s own Kim Brennan artist extraordinaire
The new section of the RBC convention center. As this was the first time i have seen it has some rather surprising artwork from all over Canada and static art that of course we sat on to rest my tired bones. eh security didn’t say anything so what the hey .
Any how all the blurry photo’s are complements of me . Sorry A.P. Fuchs I forgot to take a photo of you I will get one next show I promise
